TMFC at Summer Nationals: Two Foil Medals! Ella Zhu Wins Bronze, Anastasia Roberts Takes 6th
Portland, Ore. — July 4, 2026. Fireworks on the foil strips! Ella Zhu won bronze in Div III Women's Foil — 3rd of 154 and her first national medal — and Anastasia Roberts climbed the podium right beside her in 6th. Two foil medals in one Fourth-of-July afternoon: numbers 11 and 12 of Tim Morehouse Fencing Club's week in Portland.
The Div III squad ran deep behind them: Joey Rustogi 49th, Amelia Youm 61st, Sofia Gomez 107th and Ande Ferrari 136th.
Saber Strength: Eight in the National Points
Twenty TMFC fencers took the strip in a 312-strong Y-14 Men's Saber field — and eight of them earned national points. Gianni Mele led the charge in 11th, with Alexander Mermegas 18th, Dhruv Mattoo 28th, Marcel Ursu 46th, Nolan He 63rd, Vedh Srivats 84th, Morgan So 119th and Harrison Wang 125th. Etienne Smith, Joshua Messinger, Max Lloyd, Leo Shapiro, Marcus Avery, Aris Simeonidis, Christian and Zachary Gaw, Jack Brady, Sebastian and Alexander Rabel and Armin Leistner all battled hard in one of the deepest fields of the tournament.
More Points on the Foil Strips
In Y-14 Men's Foil (329 fencers), Declan Hart-Syed reached the Top-32 (18th), with Lucas Lin (78th) and Will Qian (111th) joining him in the national points. Kai Toomre finished 138th, Andrew Li 168th, Michael Grigoriev 204th, Nolan Moon 233rd and Adam Roth 278th.
Fencing Up, Growing Fast
In Y-12 Women's Saber, Grace Chang, Anika Kabiling and Amelia Tsui — all just 11 years old — fenced up against the 12-year-olds and banked priceless national-stage experience (Kabiling 78th, Anita Gao 117th, Chang 126th, Tsui 159th). Watch this space: Amelia is back tomorrow morning in her own Y-10 age group, seeded #18, and she's showing a lot of progress.
