Ella Calise adds two bronze medals as club delivers historic performance on fencing's biggest junior stage

New York, NY — April 2026 — The Tim Morehouse Fencing Club capped a historic week at the 2026 FIE Cadet and Junior World Championships in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, as Shaun Kim helped the USA Junior Men's Saber Team claim gold and Ella Calise earned two bronze medals (in Cadet Women's Individual Foil and Junior Women's Foil Team) — making her the club's first-ever individual medalist at the World Championships.

Kim, a Greenwich, CT native and Hackley School student who will attend Harvard University in the fall, was one of four fencers selected to represent the United States in the Junior Men's Saber Team event, helping bring home the gold in what stands as the pinnacle of junior fencing competition. Kim also placed in the top 32 of Junior Men's Saber Individual.

Calise, of Rye, NY (Sacred Heart School of Greenwich), had an equally remarkable week, winning bronze in Cadet Women's Foil individually and adding a second bronze as part of the USA Junior Women's Foil team. She also finished 5th in Junior Women's Foil individually — a performance that cements her as one of the top junior foil fencers in the world.

The medals were part of a record-breaking showing for the club, which sent 11 athletes to Rio — its largest-ever World Championships contingent. The full roster included:

  • Shaun Kim (Greenwich, CT / Hackley School) — GOLD - USA Junior Men's Saber Team

"I couldn't be prouder of the work our fencers have done to get to this point," said Tim Morehouse, founder of the Tim Morehouse Fencing Club.

The club extends congratulations to Slava Grigoriev, head of the club's foil program, whose athlete claimed two medals and a top-5 finish on the world stage this week. Equal recognition goes to the club's robust saber coaching staff, led by Tim Morehouse himself, who served as the designated coach for the USA Men's Saber team at the tournament in his role as Director of Men's Saber at USA Fencing.

Founded in 2016 on Manhattan's Upper West Side, Tim Morehouse Fencing Club has grown from a single location into a four-site program serving communities across New York City, Westchester County, and Connecticut. Ranked #3 in saber fencing in the United States and top 10 nationally in foil, the club is one of the most accomplished fencing programs in the country. This week's results in Rio are the latest proof of the caliber of competitors it continues to develop.
