Primus Cracks the Top 16: TMFC’s Big Day 2 at Summer Nationals
Primus cracks the Top 16 on a big men's saber day
Day 2 in Portland belonged to the men. 28 TMFC fencers took the strip across three events — Division I Men's Saber, Junior Men's Foil and Division I-A Women's Saber — and led by Nazir Primus's run to the Table of 16, the club put 10 fencers inside the national points. No medals on the day, but the pool sheets told the real story: four different TMFC fencers swept their pools at a perfect 6–0.
The headline came from Division I Men's Saber, the toughest senior saber field of the championships, where Nazir Primus battled all the way to the Table of 16 to finish 12th. He had company in the points: eight TMFC saber fencers finished in the top 64. And the pool round was a showcase — Khalil Thompson (6–0, +21), Jonas Broening-Chai (6–0, +19) and Devyn Anthony (6–0, +13) all ran the table, three of the very best pool rounds in the entire event.
On the foil strips, the Junior Men's Foil squad opened with momentum of its own. Philip Matsakh swept his pool 6–0 (+21) to seed inside the top 10, while Brendan Lee (47th) and Luca Ghedini (49th) fenced their way into the national points in a 325-fencer field. And in Division I-A Women's Saber, Elizabeth Halperin (39th) and Sophia Ng (54th) closed out a full day of championship saber.
