Guilford's Catherine Zhou Wins Gold in Division II Foil

Raleigh, NC (June 4, 2023) — Gold looks good on Zhou.

Tim Morehouse Fencing’s Catherine Zhou bested 63 other foil fencers to win the gold in Division II Women’s Foil at the SJCC/North American Cup.

In addition to the medal, Zhou also earned her B23 rating.

Coming out of pools in fifth place, Zhou stayed the course with some easy and then som not-so-easy Direct Elimination bouts to make the final. She overcame her opponent 15-11.

Zhou, 15, is a rising junior at Guilford High School in Guilford, Connecticut. She has been fencing for five years and trains with Coaches Slava, Eddie, Essam and Dan Bass.

In her free time, she enjoys making bracelets, hanging out with friends and cooking. She has a cat named Richard that is a British short hair. Besides fencing, she enjoys tennis and swimming for fun.

It’s been a banner year for Zhou. A flutist since fifth grade, she played in the Connecticut All-State orchestra. She was a finalist in the Connecticut Science Fair for research on the immune system. She also received the President’s Award for volunteering.

Congratulations to Catherine, her coaches and her family on all her successes.
