Port Chester, NY (Jan 1, 2023) — Tim Morehouse Fencing Club kicked off the new year with its second annual Eli and Ziad Saber cup.
It was Olympians galore in the main event - Men’s Open Saber - with 64 fencers participating and representing eight different countries. Ultimately, 10 ratings were awarded or renewed at the tournament.
The day started with Division III Mixed Saber. Twenty fencers, representing three countries, waged battle on the strips in Westchester. Gold was awarded to Durkan Fencing’s Kyle Stamis, who also renewed his D rating.
Senior Women’s Saber was next, with Tim Morehouse’s teen overachiever Brynnley McKee taking gold.
The Men’s Open Saber kicked off with nine supersized pools, each one seemingly more competitive than the other. The top eight after pools were ultimately the top eight in the finals, but there were tense moments as they sorted themselves out.
Top seed after pools, Mohamed Amer made it through three rounds of Direct Eliminations before being taken out by fourth seed Olympian Eli Dershwitz. Third seed Olympian Ziad Elsissy took out Olympian Khalil Thompson 15-12 to make the semi-finals.
Elsissy and Dershwitz made the final in the World Cup-level competition between the leading saber fencers from Egypt and the USA. Elsissy prevailed to win the gold with his unexpected high kicks, stutter steps and all-around unpredictability.
Tim Morehouse cadet fencer Robert Wang deserves a special call-out. He was the only student to crack the top eight and hang tough with the Olympians and world-class fencers.
