I really love that fencing club. My two kids are members and are always happy to go and learn with amazing coaches. My 7 year old daughter is practicing with coach Babacar Keita and my 10 year old son has been with coach Luka Oboladze for 3+ years and we couldn't be happier.
Our children have had great experiences training at TMFC East Side. The coaches are knowledgeable, dedicated, and supportive. The club provides strong training, a positive environment, and great opportunities for fencers to improve. We highly recommend TMFC East Side.
Excellent place for kids to learn fencing. The facility is bright and spacious and the staff very helpful and welcoming. Tim is friendly and great with children. My daughter looks forward to every class… I highly recommend!
2nd home for my son, who has learned to love this sport from Coach Luka Oboladze. My daughter started recently and made huge progress through weekly lessons with very dedicated Coach Babacar Keita.
Excellent facility, amazing coaches, and a great environment for students to learn and grow. I am truly grateful to have found such a supportive and inspiring place for my son to develop his skills and confidence.
My son has been attending Tim Morehouse Westchester for years. Couldn't be happier! There is truly a team spirit here. It felt like a big family when attending tournaments. All coaches are nice and professional. And their training delivers good results! Highly recommended!
Why Families Love Fencing
Parents come for a fun new activity and stay for what fencing builds in their child. These are the changes families tell us they notice first.
Confidence
Scoring a first touch and standing tall on the strip builds real, visible self-belief.
Focus
Fencing is "physical chess" — kids learn to read, react, and concentrate under pressure.
Athleticism
Footwork, balance, speed, and coordination develop in every single lesson.
Community
A welcoming club where kids make friends and train alongside Olympians.
Goal-Setting
From first lesson to competition, kids learn to set goals and earn their progress.
Everything Parents Want to Know
Honest answers to the questions we hear most from first-time fencing families.
Is fencing safe?
Yes — fencing is one of the safest competitive sports when taught properly. At TMFC, safety is built into everything we do. New students learn fundamentals step by step, with an emphasis on control and proper technique before any free fencing.
All athletes wear fencing-specific protective gear (mask, jacket, glove), and classes are closely supervised with appropriate spacing and pacing.
My child has never fenced before. Is that okay?
Absolutely. Most students begin with no prior fencing experience. Our trial lessons are specifically designed for beginners — your coach will introduce footwork, basic blade work, and a few introductory bouts at a pace that builds confidence from the very first minute.
What age is best to start fencing?
Ages 7–9 are ideal, but we welcome students as young as 6 and older beginners through their teenage years. Adults are also welcome at TMFC — many of our students started fencing as teens or adults.
Do I need to buy equipment?
No. We provide all fencing equipment for your trial lesson — mask, jacket, glove, and weapon. If your child continues with a program, your coach will help you decide when (and what) to purchase.
What should my child wear?
Athletic clothing, sneakers, and a water bottle. We'll provide the fencing gear over their clothes.
What happens during the trial lesson?
Your child will meet a coach, learn basic footwork and blade skills, fence a few introductory actions, and receive personalized recommendations for classes and next steps. The full trial is 20 minutes.
Who teaches the lessons?
TMFC's coaching staff includes Olympians, national team coaches, and experienced youth instructors who specialize in helping beginners succeed. Tim Morehouse Fencing Club was founded by 2008 Olympic Silver Medalist Tim Morehouse.
What happens after the trial lesson?
Your coach will discuss your child's goals and recommend the best program based on age, experience, and interest level — from weekly group classes to competitive training.
Can my child compete?
Yes. Students can choose to fence recreationally or pursue local, regional, national, and even international competition as they develop. TMFC athletes regularly compete across the country and internationally.
Where can fencing lead my child?
From first touch to the college strip — fencing opens doors most sports can't. Here's the typical TMFC pathway:
Trial Lesson
20-min private. No experience needed.
Starter Program
Fundamentals in small group classes.
Ongoing Training
Build skills, confidence & love of the sport.
Local Competitions
First tournaments & real competitive experience.
Regional & National

College & Beyond

Why choose TMFC?
TMFC is trusted by more than 500 families across NYC and Westchester and has developed everyone from first-time fencers to Olympians, World Champions, and Ivy League recruits.
Is fencing right for my child?
Fencing is an excellent fit for children who enjoy sports, strategy, learning new skills, and building confidence. Whether your child wants a fun new activity, a competitive sport, or a path toward college athletics, fencing offers opportunities for all levels. The best way to find out? Book a trial lesson — 20 minutes is enough for you and your child to know if it's a fit.
