Leo Shapiro Wins Gold at the Durkan American Dream

Garfield, NJ (Nov 5-6, 2023) — It was a weekend for the young fencers to shine.

Fencers from the Tim Morehouse Fencing Club won medals in all three weapons at the Durkan American Dream RYC, with some of the youngest tasting victory for the first time.

Leo Shapiro won his first gold medal in Y-10 Men’s Saber. His teammate Lucas Ketcham won sixth place. Nia Maluki was the silver medalist in Y-10 Women’s Saber.

Bronze medals were shared by Thomas Czarnecki and Michael Grogoriev in Y-12 Men’s Foil. And winning his best for Tim Morehouse’s young épée program, Pierce Zhao also won bronze in Y-14 Men’s Epée.

Savannah Li earned a fifth-place medal in Y-14 Women’s Foil. In Y- 14 Men’s Saber, Viraat Sarwahi won fifth place and Miles Chambers took sixth.

Now that the season is in full swing, competitions will get harder as fencers get deeper into their training regimes. Like they say in football, “Any given Sunday,” which is apropos to almost any fencing tournament. Any fencer could have a great day or the worst fencing day, it all comes down to how you react to the challenge you face.

Congratulations fencers, coaches and families.
