Bucharest, Romania (Jan 29-30) — They’re getting the hang of these international competitions.
Shaun Kim and Gabriel McCarthy traveled to their second international tournament last weekend — the Riposta Cup 2022 in Bucharest, Romania — and both made the top 32 of 215 fencers overall.
McCarthy was 26th after pools, winning five of six bouts. In the direct elimination rounds, he won his first bout 15-14, his second bout 15-13 and lost in the third round 15-2, finishing at 26th.
Kim was 47th after pools, winning four of his five pool bouts. In the direct elimination rounds, he won his first bout 15-13, his second-round bout 15-10 and in the third, fell 15-12 to finish at 27th .
Action returned to Polivalenta Hall on Sunday for Men’s Saber Teams. In this competition, Kim and McCarthy fenced on Team USA 2. The team gave a valiant effort, coming 14th out of 39 teams, losing to Turkey 45-40.
